Winners are selected by the Jury, based on their outstanding creative achievement.
In its tense political environment, Hong Kong’s burgeoning media sector has been forced to self-censor. The Foreign Correspondents Club’s decision to suspend its Human Rights Press Awards is just the latest sign that the city’s tense social environment has drawn new red lines on what institutions can and cannot say.
The 2024 edition of the Hong Kong Film Awards was another milestone in the city’s illustrious history as it crowned its first female director as best picture. Besides highlighting the work of top actresses like Anita Mui, Sandy Lam and Joey Wong, it also awarded a Lifetime Achievement award to martial arts icon Sammo Hung, whose movies helped pave the way for stars of the 1980s like Donnie Yen and Bruce Lee.
As the Olympic Games get underway in Paris, Hong Kong athletes are competing for medals across a wide array of sports, including table tennis, fencing, swimming, sailing and rowing. Kitesurfer Maximilian Maeder is on the verge of a historic achievement: he’s the only Asian to compete in all five sports at the same Olympics, and could take home the first ever Team HK gold medal.
Athletes’ prize money for winning a medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics is doubled when they finish in one of the top three, resulting in a massive windfall for Hong Kong competitors. The country’s athletes are currently ranked sixth in the world and can expect a haul of over HK$12 million for a bronze medal, while gold and silver medals will bring in HK$6 million and HK$3 million respectively.
