The Basics of Dominoes

domino

The game of dominoes is similar to playing cards. Each domino bears an identifying mark on one side, but is blank on the other. The dominoes are divided into two squares, with some having spots and pips and some being blank. The players take turns playing as they match up the pairs of dominoes. They then decide which one wins by counting the number of the identifying marks on each square.

All Fives

All Fives is a simple point-type Dominoes game played with a Double-Six domino set. In this game, players shuffle the dominoes face down and take turns drawing five tiles each. The rest of the tiles are used as the boneyard, and players may draw from it when needed. Players are allowed to use their own dominoes and those of their opponents. The goal of All Fives is to be the first player to reach the agreed-upon point total.

Draw game

There are two variations of the Draw game in domino. In one, the player with the lowest score after three rounds wins the game. In another variation, the winner has fewer tiles than the other players at the end of the game, and receives a bonus. In the first variation, a player would start with seven dominoes, whereas players in the other two would begin with five, four, or three tiles.

Block game

The Block game is the simplest variation of domino games. Played with Double-Six dominoes, this game requires two to four players. Each player draws seven tiles. The rest are set aside. The lead player places down the first domino and lays down tiles of the same number adjacent to it. A double placed horizontally on top of the other tiles is known as the spinner. The game continues until one player has at least 100 points.

Thierry Denoual’s game

Thierry Denoual invented a new variation of the classic game of domino, using pictures instead of numbers. Printed by Blue Orange Games, this portable version of the game uses a 120-degree bent double-six set. In Domino, the goal is to build a circle of three dominoes, and the first player to reach 120 points wins the game. However, you may play as many rounds as you like, as long as you keep your opponent from building a circle of three dominoes.
